THE Steelwings Harley Davidson club of East London has donated blankets, toiletries and food to the East London Child and Youth Care Centre (ELCYCC).
The home, catering for 105 children, is located off the N6 to Stutterheim. Staff and children were delighted with the generous donation from the bikers.
Steelwings chairman Johann Olwagen said: “We have always been grappling about how we can give back. Our eyes have been opened today about the circumstances out there.
“We started off doing a blanket run with our 37-member club and the donations snowballed. Today we are handing over 34 blankets to keep children warm this winter and a number of other products.
“We want to give back and be part of the community and not just be seen as people who get on our bikes and go for a ride,” Olwagen said.
Steelwings hopes to make this an annual fundraiser and rope in other clubs in the future.
Social worker Larne Robus of ELCYCC said: “Thanks to everyone. We are blessed by a number of businesses to sustain our work. Last year in May we were on the verge of closing our doors, but we have experienced a phenomenal turnaround.
“We would not be able to do this without the East London community and businesses. We have been able to correct the menu so children can have a more nutritious diet. This donation means a lot to us.”
