Scooter fans unite to form new club

IF YOU love scooters and would like to join a club in East London, the Gonubie Scooters Club is just for you.

The newly-launched club has six members so far, the oldest being 75 years old, who live in Gonubie, but will welcome anyone from different suburbs in East London.

Mike van Aarenthals came up with the idea of starting a club, and invited random people he saw on scooters to join.

“Scooters are way cheaper than [motor] bikes and they are safer. That’s why we love them. And we invite everyone who shares a passion for scooters to join us.

“The invite is open.

“We are not speed-driven, we are just doing it for fun,” Van Aarenthals said.

The club went on a trip to Thomas River recently and are planning another to Morgan’s Bay on February 25.

One of the club’s founding members, Stan Moore said: “We enjoy it, it is fun. The journey since we started has been amazing. We are just a group of scooter enthusiasts who enjoy the outdoors.”

Although it is a men’s club, women will be accommodated at a later stage, Van Aarenthals said.

For those interested in becoming members, there is a joining fee of R100 and a R50 monthly fee that will go towards a year-end function.

The club also holds a monthly breakfast meeting.
