The annual Umtiza Arts Festival kicked off its vibrant programme on Wednesday evening with an arts exhibition held at Ann Bryant Coach House in Southernwood.
The East London Fine Arts Society (ELFAS)”Anything But Painting” Exhibition was the perfect setting to ease into the start of the festival.
Ann Bryan Art Gallery curator Leon du Preez said that the festival first started in 2016.
“It has taken the cultural hub of East London and put in on display for the community to enjoy. All the art work has been collected form various artists and is up for sale, “ said du Preez.
“I was making coffee mugs and cups before. I decided to try something new of making vases – I love the colours and mixing them,” said ELFAS member, Mafuzandile Solombela.
Some artists were inspired by their surroundings. One example is Dr Amitabh Mitra, who heads the Department of Emergency Medicine at Cecilia Makiwane Heritage Hospital in Mdantsane.
“My t-shirts, “Mdantsane Breathing” are inspired by a book I authored a few years ago of the same name. I’ve noticed that some of the girls in Mdantsane are fashion orientated and have bought my t-shirts,” said Mitra.
The arts festival will have free entrances to some events and others can be booked through Computicket.
