Today is the 76th birthday of former president, Thabo Mbeki. Mbeki, as the successor of Nelson Mandela, was elected as the second democratic president on June 14th 1999 and resigned the position on September 24th 2008. Mbeki is one of four children of the late Epainette and Govan Mbeki. He was born in Mbeluweni village in the Eastern Cape on this day in 1942. Mbeki is married to Zanele Mbeki, and he is also the brother of Moeletsi Goduka Mbeki who, among other things, is a political economist; deputy chairman of the South African Institute of International Affairs, an independent think tank based at the University of the Witwatersrand; and political analyst for Nedcor Bank.
