FORTY years ago the Daily Dispatch hosted its first Fun Run and until a couple of years ago it was generally held in the first week of September to mark the start of Spring. However, the decision to host it nearer to Summer, and the opening of the Festive Season, has proven to be a well-supported move by the East London community.
Over 2,500 fun runners and walkers participated in their choice of 4km or 8km distance on Sunday, whether walking or wheeling, on a gorgeous summer’s day in this year’s #SparDailyDispatchSummerFunRun
Families supported the Fun Run in their droves, donning T-shirts provided by Jumbo, with children posing with PnA Stationers mascot, Penny and adults and children alike capturing unique moments at the Vincent Park Shopping Centre gazebo and colourful VW Combi.
Lilyfontein drummies as well as music provided by Wild Coast FM and George Randall Primary School’s marimba band added to the fantastic vibe on the day.
As MC for the day, local celebrity Kerry Hiles provided upbeat commentary throughout the proceedings.
The race encourages, and allows for, participation from those with varying physical challenges so it was appropriate that the Sweethearts Foundation was this year’s beneficiary as the Foundation is actively involved in wheelchair provision to those in need.
Hot and thirsty at the end of the race, participants headed directly to the Coca-Cola can van for ice-cold liquid refreshment and some opportunists made use of the sea and swimming pools for a well-deserved cooling down before heading home.
