The delicious milkshake owes its origins to the US and dates back to the early 1900s, when it was first an alcoholic drink, a variation on the eggnog, made with milk, egg and whisky. Later, sans the booze, it emerged as a frothy blend of milk with a dash of flavouring, finished off with a sprinkle of ground nutmeg.

As with many great originals, the milkshake has over the years evolved into something akin to an over-the-top race-day hat, dripping with adornments of cream, fruit, sweets, biscuits and chocolate and always finished off with a couple of zany straws.

Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers & Ribs at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town has taken the milkshake makeover one step further and recently, with its whopping 207 different shakes, was officially named the outlet with “the most varieties of milkshakes commercially available in the world” by Guinness World Records.

Acquiring the title was no mean feat and took 18 months of hard work by the restaurant owners, who embarked on the long process with strict rules encompassing many certification forms and checks and balances, including checking their menu, sales mix, recipes, ingredients, location and various other formalities, before the record attempt was confirmed late last year, culminating in the announcement recently.

Some of the more unusual flavours in the melange are malva & custard, lemon meringue, coffee & doughnut, Milo & banana and apple pie & cream, plus hundreds more.

For those in search of alternatives you’ll find vegan and fat-free shakes, yoghurt and even adult-only shakes, all served with eco-friendly straws.
