They partnered with a number of international musicians to release a music video, ‘Corona’, to explain what we should do to help minimise the spread of Covid-19.

According to SAMW CEO Michael Moeti, the collaboration is in a similar vein to past musical collaborations such as ‘Do they know it’s Christmas’ and ‘We are the world’.

Moeti said he saw an opportunity create a platform for all the artists whom he had signed on as part of SAMW to help educate citizens.

The song was written by hip-hop artist AnadaTrap Story and featurs the following musicians:

  • Ryana (French Algerian)
  • Khanyo (South African)
  • Sauceman (South African)
  • Rama (Tanzanian/Australian)
  • Nga (Congo Brazzaville/French)
  • Joe Gez (DRC/Canadian)
  • Vibeby Melo (Canadian)
  • Spitten Image (Canadian)

SAMW was first conceived by Moeti in 2019 following a trip to Canada with department of sports, recreation, arts and culture (Dsrac) director-general Vuzumuzi Mkhize to attend the Canadian Music Week.

The event was officially ratified in January 2020 by Dsrac MEC Mbali Hlophe with Johannesburg being named as the host city.

This year, the event will run on January 26-28 and will focus on building a strong partnership with Canada as well as taking place predominantly online due to the ongoing lockdown.
