The World of Art Movement (WAM), which focuses on the artistic development of children in Mdantsane, is set to put on an exciting showcase exhibiting their talents from 30 September to the 1st of October 2022 at the Inkcubeko Yomntwana Arts Festival at the Orient Theatre.
The drama society that the kids are a part of is called Iingcambu Zempumelelo (translated to ‘art is our culture’) Creative Arts society and will see 200 young children from 10 schools in Mdantsane showcasing their talents.
The World of Art Movement, a multi-art group, is based at the Mdantsane Arts Centre and consists of members Cinga Dyala, Masixole Ncapayi, Xolisani Tayo, Libhongo Mbiko, Zuko Xauka, Kabelo Mokone, and Sinentlahla Fukula. “We are introducing art to children while also embracing giftedness.
“We want to normalize promoting skillfulness in children because art is not just a hobby, it’s a culture; how one dresses, how one carries him/herself,” said Dyala.
Dyala said the event would give young children a much-needed opportunity to explore art, not only as a hobby but also as a serious career path.
“We have been teaching children about different ways to express themselves through art. We have always taken a very holistic approach to it because we want to change the narrative that art can only be taken seriously as a hobby.
”This is a great opportunity for the kids because unfortunately, we live in a society that does not always prioritize art.”
WAM has partnered with the Gompo Arts Centre and universities like Walter Sisulu University, as well as Buffalo City Municipality, Nal’iBali, local libraries, and the ANC has made donations.
The show includes drama, singing, poetry, book reading, and fashion, showcasing local designers. Tickets are R50 for children and R100 for adults, available at the door.
