Hudson High star wins scholarship

Outstanding Hudson Park High School rugby player Sibabalwe Mahashe, who captained the SA U18 rugby team in the international Test against France and England, has been awarded a scholarship by JUMBO Clothing.

The company has awarded its annual JUMBO Sports Excellence Scholarship to school pupils for outstanding performance in a team sport, since 2017.

It is awarded to pupils who embody the values of pride, passion, positivity, and caring in sport.

Sibabalwe is one of the shining examples of these values in action, the company said.

As the 2022 SA Schools captain and captain of the 2022 Border Under 18 Craven Week, Sibabalwe has proved himself to be an exceptional leader and undeniable talent.

He was recently selected to captain the SA U18 rugby team.

He went on to win the Player of the Series award in the international Test against France and England, and led his team to a remarkable 49-17 victory over France.

The talented young star is contracted to the Lions Rugby Company for 2023.

Recipients of the JUMBO Sports Excellence Scholarship each receive R10 000, paid to their school to support their sporting or academic needs.

They also receive a monthly shopping voucher to the value of R500, redeemable at any JUMBO store.

In a statement, JUMBO Clothing, which has firm roots in the Eastern Cape, said the province had produced some of the country’s finest sporting stars, and the company hoped to help identify and support emerging talent through its scholarship for many years to come.
