If you are looking for a feel-good movie that will set you at ease about the drama in your family, look no further than Amazon Prime’s latest offering, The People We Hate At The Wedding.

It follows siblings Alice (Kristen Bell) and Paul (Ben Platt), their mother Donna (Alison Janney), and their tense and very awkward reunion at their semi-estranged wealthy half-sister Eloise’s (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) wedding in the English countryside.

Over the course of the wedding week, the family’s many skeletons are wrenched from the closet.

We get to see Alice and Paul’s struggles in their respective relationships, as well as their mother having to deal with life as a single woman after her husband’s death.

The storyline is simple and predictable in an oddly comforting way, despite a few twists and turns. Thankfully, Bell’s sarcastic wit and the chemistry between her and Dennis (Dustin Milligan) help carry the film.

However, its shortcomings include American movie makers’ stereotypical portrayal of British characters.

It also falls short in its portrayal of the LGBTQ+ community, with most scenes featuring gay characters somewhat cringe-worthy and painful to watch.

One thing it does get right is showing the different layers of family drama and dysfunction while highlighting the importance of family bonds.

The film’s biggest message is how children often see their parents’ actions as selfish, oblivious to the sacrifices they have made.

This makes the hour-and-a-half-long film a worthwhile watch.
