World-renowned saxophonist Andrew Young will be performing at the Guild Theatre on Tuesday, March 14. The show, titled Sounds of the ‘70s will feature Young performing alongside Gqeberha pianist, Boet Strydom.
This will be Young’s first official performance back in East London since before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Young has travelled the world with his saxophone, with one of his highlights being performing in Beijing, China.
“Performing in China is always great because I could perform where the smallest crowds range between 2,000 and 16,000. I could also perform despite all the censorship laws.
“There’s really nothing to censor with saxophone music, so I guess I found a loophole.
“I’ve been all over the world, but I am always happy to be back in East London.
“The communication between the artist and the audience is always so great. I look forward to going into the audience and interacting with everyone,” Young said.
He will be performing songs by famous ‘70s bands like the Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire, Joy, the Temptations, and the Jacksons.
“I will be performing the music that I grew up listening to. The ‘70s is a period that greatly shaped the musician I have become. I particularly enjoyed Motown, Dionne Warwick, and Jonathan Butler. We’re going to have a fun night of great music,” said Young.
Ruth Daines-Slack, Young’s concert and tour manager, explained that this is the perfect opportunity for young saxophonists to come and enjoy an evening of good music.
“Last year we hosted a masterclass for school kids to spend time with Andrew and learn what they could from him.
“This year we are offering young saxophonists free entry to watch the show. We want as many people as possible to enjoy the show as possible,” said Daines-Slack.
Tickets for the show are available at Computicket or any Shoprite or Checkers outlet, at R200 for adults, R150 for pensioners, R100 for pupils, and R180 per person for block bookings of 10 or more.
