This week we chat with aspiring Hip-Hop musician Mzukisi Yawa from Mdantsane about his musical journey.
What products/services do you offer?
I am a hip-hop artist and a businessman.
What skills do you possess?
I write my own songs and create my own music.
When and how did your journey in the music industry start?
I have always wanted to be a musician. I started writing songs in 2002 and began recording music in 2009.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I am inspired by my relationship with God. I am also inspired by many artists, both locally and internationally. I look up to artists like Eminem, Stone Cold, A-Reece, DJ Sbu, and Zolisa Xaluva, just to name a few. My family and friends also inspire me.
How many people do you work with?
On my mixtape, titled Password, I have worked with Mkhez, a producer from Nxarhuni, and Thozi Benguza, who is a fellow artist and producer. For now, it’s only them but I would love to work with other artists.
What do you think sets you apart from other artists in the same field?
I believe that I am authentic, and I am able to persevere through any challenge.
What are some of the challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?
Unfortunately, I have dealt with many issues of jealousy and being sabotaged by people who don’t support my career. I stay in prayer to overcome these challenges. I ignore the bad and focus on the good.
Do you have any proud moments that you have had in your career so far?
Some of the proud moments I’ve had was being nominated as an up-and-coming artist at the Live Your Dream Awards 2018 in Durban, the best hip-hop artist at the GAMA Awards 2019 in Cape Town, and the best hip-hop artist at the MAMA Awards 2020 in Pretoria.
What are some of your goals for 2023?
My goal for 2023 is to release new music and music videos for my fans. I would also like to write a book about my musical journey, documenting the challenges and how I overcame them.
What advice do you have for someone who is interested in a similar career?
My advice is to follow your dreams. Do what makes you happy, people will judge you anyway. Don’t worry about people’s negative opinions. Focus on your dream.

I have a clothing brand called No Go To Room. I sell caps, T-shirts and hoodies, bucket hats, and sweaters.
