Go Review – Ted Lasso

WHOLESOME COACH: Jason Sudeikas stars in the Apple original series’ Ted Lasso’. Picture: SUPPLIED

GENRE: Comedy, drama, sport

In a world where movies and shows about crime, violence, and horror top the trending charts every week, a simple comedy about sports will stand out with ease.

Ted Lasso tells the story of an American college football coach who moves to London after being recruited to coach AFC Richmond, a fictional English Premier League team.

The team’s owner, Rebecca Welton (played by Hannah Waddingham) hires Lasso with the hopes that his lack of experience will lead to his failure (a personal act of revenge on her cheating ex-husband, the team’s previous owner).

However, Ted’s charm, personality, and humour begin to win over Rebecca, the team, and those who had been skeptical about his appointment.

Jason Sudeikas as Ted Lasso is easily the most wholesome, lovable, and funny character on television at the moment.

His American naivety and ignorance make it all the more entertaining to watch as he navigates the British way of living and speaking.

At first, it’s clear that Ted is out of his depth as his unorthodox coaching methods seem ineffective, but we watch as he builds relationships with his team and shares important life lessons with them.

What he lacks in knowledge, he makes up for in optimism, determination, and biscuits.

It first started in 2020 and is currently in its third season, which makes it a perfect binge-watching opportunity. This is a show that will keep you smiling with each 45-minute episode.

As much as the show is soccer-focused, it does cover important topics such as mental health, with realistic and sensitive portrayals of panic attacks followed by on-screen therapy sessions that provide advice for viewers.

The show also explores the complexities of family and romantic relationships and self-belief.

Soccer fans will love it for all the football references and mentions of big teams like Chelsea and Manchester City, while those who aren’t particularly interested in football will enjoy the humor, the drama, and the countless pop-culture references Lasso makes in each episode.

Ted Lasso is available to watch on Apple TV+
