Dancers of the Jo Jackson Dance Company are preparing to compete at the DanceStar World Dance Masters to be held in Croatia next month.
Twenty-one dancers from East London will be joining the SA dance team in Porec, Croatia and competing as solo, duo and trio acts.
The competition will run from May 13-22. These dancers competed at the national competition in Pretoria last year.
The DanceStar World Dance Masters is an annual dance competition that aims to broaden the knowledge that dancers possess through competitions, workshops and observing various dance styles and, of course, winning awesome prizes.
Lanelli Meek, who will be participating in a group as well as a solo act, says this is a huge milestone for him and his dance career.
“For many dancers all over the world, the ultimate goal is to perform on the biggest stages, and for me this will be the biggest stage I’ve ever been on.
“I’ve always had the support of my family which includes my amazingly talented dance family. This is a dream that has been a good six years in the making.
“As for my dancing career, this opportunity means that I get to share the joy and happiness that I get from dancing with audiences from all over the world,” said Meek.
The international trip was made possible for the dancers through their many fundraising efforts as well as generous donations from various businesses and companies.
Dance company head Jo Jackson says this is a proud moment for her as a dance teacher.
“I am exceptionally proud of my dancers. It has taken many hours of practice because they are a very large group, and it can be very difficult to make them look like one unit when they’re dancing, especially considering how unique their individual dance styles are.
“ As dance teachers, it is our duty and responsibility to expose our dancers to opportunities like this so they can grow as dancers,” she said.
