Netflix has just released an exciting new crime thriller, Unseen, that perfectly encapsulates the innovative potential of SA’s entertainment industry.
Unseen is a fascinating show about a cleaner named Zenzi Mwale who sets out to find her husband after he is released from jail. What follows is a series of events where Zenzi’s desperation leads to her committing shocking acts of violence, unnoticed and unsuspected, shielded by the stereotypes attached to domestic workers.
Zenzi is brilliantly played by the talented Gail Mabalane, who is perfectly cast in this role, and does an excellent job at drawing the audience in and convincing viewers to root for her, despite the murders she commits throughout the series.
One of the main aspects of the series is how Zenzi, and cleaners in general, can easily move around in society unnoticed and unseen, making them the perfect people to carry out certain acts. The storyline is intriguing with quite a few shocking twists and turns that make the otherwise predictable plot worth watching.
The star-studded cast, including Colin Moss, Rapulana Seiphemo, Dineo Langa and Vuyo Dubula, work well together to bring a captivating and entertaining story to life.
The cinematography captures the gritty beauty of SA with multiple stunning shots capturing the both the picturesque and grotesque aspects of contemporary Cape Town.
The series only has six episodes, which makes it the perfect weekend binge-watch.
The story ends on a cliffhanger and multiple unanswered questions which will hopefully result in a season two announcement soon.
