We chat with Chantel Haschick about the clothing business she runs with her husband, Des

How would you describe your business? What exactly do you do?

Ursula’s Design and Manufacture is your first choice for all clothing and alteration needs, from altering and repairing new and existing garments to creating beautiful masterpieces. We have designed numerous couture, bridal gowns, groom and best man attire, tailor-made suits, matric farewell outfits, and other garments for formal occasions.

What would you say has kept the business going over the years?

The continued support of our loyal customers and the knowledge and skill set of our dedicated team.

Please share some history on when the business started.

Ursula’s Alterations started in 1985 and has been in operation in East London for more than 35 years. We purchased the business in August 2021 with a vision to expand our offerings and offer better customer service with faster turnaround times.

How many people do you work with?

We have 10 staff members, including three seamstresses and one tailor.

What sets you apart from similar businesses in East London?

We are centrally located in Vincent. We have an amazing team of staff, some that have been with the business since its inception. We are approachable and friendly. We’re always looking for new and exciting opportunities. When it comes to fabric, there is nothing we cannot do.

What are some of your most popular products and services?

Regular requests include zip replacements, shortening of garments, size adjustments of jackets, and formal wear. Our dressmaking division is steadily growing with many requests coming in for custom-made outfits, especially suits and wedding attire.

WIDE RANGE: A few garments and items they have repaired or altered.

What qualifications or experience would you say one needs in order to work at your business?

From a seamstress perspective, you need to understand the dynamics of the design and style of a garment as well as have the necessary skills to perform the alteration. Excellent customer service and client interaction is also crucial.

What are some of the biggest challenges you deal with and how do you overcome them?

The current economic conditions are a huge challenge for small businesses. We are required to spend more money to keep our doors open while trying to keep our prices affordable. Ever-increasing generator, fuel, and electricity costs are ongoing challenges.

What would you consider to be some of the biggest milestone moments in your business over the years?

Since buying the business, we have introduced many new processes to provide a better experience. We have a strong vision and look forward to achieving bigger milestones.

What advice or tips do you have for someone who is interested in a similar line of business?

Do your market research and be realistic when setting goals. With an ever-changing environment you will face many challenges, however, do not give up. Slow and steady wins the race.

Is there anything else that you would like our readers to know?

We have recently introduced a curio section, CurioSewty, into our service offerings. We offer a wide variety of uniquely produced craft items including Luna leather toiletry bags, cushions, tote bags, various novelty items and clothing labels. Custom-made items and gifts can also be requested.
