Cambridge High School first XV rugby captain, Lukhanyo Makeleni has been selected for the Border U18 Academy Week squad. The Go! & Express caught up with Makeleni to chat about what this opportunity means to him and how he balances his academics and rugby career.
What does this selection mean to you?
For a person who has always doubted himself, this really means a lot to me. It is a confidence booster. I think, after the selection, I will look to play rugby at varsity level.
How and when did your journey in rugby begin?
I started playing rugby in grade 6, my first year at Cambridge Primary School. Rugby has provided a platform for me to express myself or release any anger or stress that I incur in all other aspects of my life. That is what has kept me going.
What are you looking forward to, playing for the squad?
I am looking forward to making new friends, creating fond memories, and obviously representing our province to the best of my abilities.
What does your training programme look like?
It is really difficult to juggle everything at the same time. I try to remain organised by planning ahead. I also try to be as disciplined as possible, but it is not always easy.
You are the team captain and, you’re in the top 15 in the grade academically. How do you maintain a balance?
I would advise my fellow Cantabridgians to learn to identify when to do certain things and to set up some sort of programme or routine to suit their lives. There are times for one to enjoy and have fun, but those times are most enjoyable after working hard and achieving what you need to do. I would also advise people to try out as many things as possible, but not to commit themselves to too many things as less is more.
Who do you look up to in your sporting career and why?
Trevor Nyakane and Ox Nche, both play the same position as I do and they have done well for themselves.
What is your goal in rugby?
To enjoy and seize every moment to the fullest.
What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
I do not tend to evaluate myself much, but one of my weaknesses is not backing myself or constantly having doubts.
