What services or products do you offer?
I create pathways at schools to encourage children to use their bodies and I offer designer picnics.
When did your business start?
I started doing the pathways at schools in 2018, then added my designer picnics to my portfolio in 2022. I only opened my picnic garden, Urban Roots, in January 2023.
How did the idea come about?
I am a qualified teacher, and education is a passion of mine. I find with all the changes society has gone through, education is an institution that has largely stayed the same. I wanted to try make a difference, even if only on a small scale. With regards to my designer picnics, my husband and I have always loved picnics, and now our girls do too. I saw a gap in the market when we couldn’t find a clean, safe, quiet, pretty space to have a picnic, other than in our garden.
Where do you get the inspiration for the designs?
I find inspiration in things all around me. The smallest thing can spark an idea. I also use Pinterest, and ideas come to me in my dreams.
What experience or qualification does one need in order to do what you do?
I suppose you don’t need a specific qualification, just a creative mind, artistic flair and passion.
How many people do you work with?
For my school projects I have a team of four, and my designer picnics, I also have a team of four.
What satisfaction do you get out of doing the work that you do?
I love seeing the children using my pathways and having fun with them. With regard to my designer picnics, I love the feedback I get from my clients. Both my portfolios are such a creative experience. Each design is unique.
What are your most popular products?
My gross motor pathways are very popular with schools, and special birthday picnics.
Who is your target market?
Primary schools with children still developing gross motor skills, reading and writing skills. My designer picnics are suitable for anyone over the age of 18.
What goals are you working towards?
To find more of a balance between work, family time and me time.
What advice do you have for anyone interested in starting their own business?
Be organised. Have a clear vision and make sure that you are completely ready to open when you do. You only have one opportunity to make a first impression.
Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?
Our picnics are a real spoil, it’s not just a picnic, but an experience. It is something very exclusive, especially for those special birthdays where you just get to be in the moment with those you love without being interrupted or rushed.
