How did you get started with crochet, and what inspired you to turn it into a business?
We chat to Carol Lombaard about her small business, Fabulouss, where she creates crochet pieces.
How did you get started with crochet, and what inspired you to turn it into a business?
I have always enjoyed crocheting and crafting. One day a work colleague saw me making a scarf for my daughter and wanted to know how much I would charge to make her one. Soon more scarf orders came and so I decided to make a business out of it. My business has since grown to much more than just crocheting and scarves.
When did your business start?
Fabulouss officially started in 2021, although I did do some of my work before then.
What experience or skills does one need in order to do crocheting?
The only skill I would say one needs to crochet is patience. Other than that, you need a hook, yarn and a creative mind.
How many people do you currently work with?
I currently work alone, but my daughter sometimes helps me with crafting and inspires me with new ideas.
Do you have a signature or best-selling item in your collection?
My crocheted bags and beanies are quite popular.
What challenges have you faced in running your small crochet business?
I do not have my own transportation, so it makes it a little harder getting around and meeting with customers.
But thankfully, I do get to attend markets which is also a great way to get your products and name out there.
What are the most rewarding aspects of having your own business?
I would say it’s seeing your customers’ faces when they receive their goodies. And when they send you photos and compliment you after receiving their order.
Who would you say is your target market?
I would say that I target young adults mostly, although I do try and cater for all age groups.
What are some of the goals you are currently working towards?
My goals are to have my own shop and work solely for myself.
What advice do you have for anyone interested in starting their own business?
My advice would be to follow your dreams and go for it.
Nothing is impossible.
It may take a long time, but with determination and hard work, you can achieve your goals.
