The sassy “I love boobies” — a uniquely SA campaign to make breast cancer examinations free and accessible to women — is happening in Buffalo City at 8am on October 11.
“This is a catchy marketing title which has a profound message.
“It is wholesome and healthy but distinctly rooted in concern and compassion,” local volunteer hosts Gail Wild and Aimee de Jager said.
They are stepping up as the first local organisers of this event on behalf of the independent, national women-run organisation.
“We are co-hosting a secret swim just for women — the venue is mysterious — but you have the date and time when women in our area will gather on the beach for a photograph and swim,” they said.
The venue will be released at midnight on Friday October 10 to women who have bought a R200 a ticket via the website, Iloveboobies.co.za.
“At 8am on the day, there will be a brief welcoming speech from us and a short talk by East London breast cancer activist Sam Ramsey. (See Sam’s inspiring interview in Go! next Thursday.)
“The women taking part can choose to be in the photograph of their naked backs, followed by a quick swim in our beautiful ocean,” they said.
“The campaign helps women in rural and urban areas who cannot get screened either through limited funds or no access to medical facilities or who face social barriers.
“We want to assist women to get the information they require for this vital aspect of women’s health.
“This is a wonderfully innovative and independent SA campaign.”
Spot prizes can include “I Love Boobies” socks, which are given to women who get the screening as a reminder to self-examine.
