Vuya, 8, played for SA in a global chess battle

Merrifield Preparatory’s grade 2 chess sensation Vuya Mdaka, 8, proudly represented SA at the prestigious Commonwealth Chess Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia recently.

Mdaka’s passage to international recognition is built on determination and consistency, we were told.

He earned regional and provincial colours and went on to be awarded Chess SA colours and a spot in the SA junior chess closed championships.

He has an impressive rating of 1,624, which is a remarkable achievement for his age.

The Commonwealth Chess Championships brought together top players from 19 countries.

Competing alongside experienced international players from India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Kenya, Australia, Mdaka earned three points out of nine games in his first major tournament. His focus now turns to the African Youth Chess Championships in Zimbabwe in two weeks, where he will again represent SA.

“This has been a great tournament, and I can only improve and do better in Zimbabwe,” Mdaka said.

Chess was like a “fun puzzle” that required patience, thinking, and planning, he said.

He practices almost daily.

His favourite piece is the queen — for her versatility and he enjoys the complexity of the Catalan opening.

Mdaka’s coach, Sunu Mabhera, praised his tenacity and fearlessness when facing stronger opponents, noting that Mdaka often triumphed over older players.

“He is not shy to play stronger players,” Mabhera said.

With comprehensive training and local tournaments under his belt, Mdaka has shown he is prepared for the global board.

Merrifield School, Vuya’s family and community, has been a pillar of support.

The school integrates chess into its curriculum, encouraging young talents such as Mdaka to thrive.

Mabhera urges other schools and communities to embrace chess, highlighting available local clubs and support networks.

To aspiring chess players, Mdaka said: “Start now, have fun, and don’t give up when it’s hard. The more you play, the better you get.”
