When KuGompo City entrepreneur and Pot O’Curry owner Tubs Lingham began experiencing persistent shortness of breath, he initially brushed it off as a lingering bout of asthma or a drop in fitness.
Even as his smartwatch alerted him to a resting heart rate hovering above 100 BPM, he relied on an asthma pump and nebulisers provided by his fiancée Cayla Kruger, pushing through the daily fatigue.

What doctors initially suspected to be interstitial lung disease quickly turned into a far more alarming diagnosis following a scan by a cardiologist.
“The echocardiogram showed I had just 20% function of my heart,” said Lingham.
“I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy affecting the left ventricle.
“The pump was only circulating about 20mm of blood per beat instead of the normal 80mm.
“They told me I was in severe heart failure.”
Compounding the crisis, his blood sugar levels had surged to 19.5 mmol/L. At 160kg (weighing 142kg at the start of his hospital admission), the reality hit him with brutal clarity.
“I’ve got three daughters. That was the moment I realised my life wasn’t just my own.
