Maybe I’m feeling soppy and in the mood for something romantic that’s not your typical buff hottie-meets-toy blonde babe.
December festive flicks are coming people. Chad Michael Murray I think is returning to our screens with some Christmas cheese. Let’s see.
The second season of Nobody Wants This is about to drop on October 23!
A modern love story based off a real couples meet cute, the Netflix series stars Kristen Bell and Adam Brody as two people who really shouldn’t work together, but somehow do.
It’s LA, it’s podcasts and lattes and hip cool American girlie pop Joanne (Bells character).
She’s brash, kind of rude, and trying to turn her podcast about her dating life with her sister into a proper brand.
They yap on the couch about her chaotic experiences with clueless men, her sister Morgan (played by Justine Lupe) is su-u-u-ch a great character too. I think she’s my favourite.
Anyway, Joanne goes to a friend’s party wearing this huge fur coat, and strikes up a conversation with a very handsome stranger.
Adam Brody plays Noah.
Anyone else remember him from the mid 2000s teen show The O.C.? Maybe I’m giving my age away, but he’s cute as a button and somehow even better looking with a beard.
Noah is a witty, unassuming rabbi. The chemistry is instant, and so is the conflict.
He’s from a traditional Jewish family, grounded in faith and structure. She’s blonde, loud and proudly secular.
The acting feels super natural, Bell is forthright and bold, Brody carrying the same charm that made Seth Cohen a teen heartthrob.
The show, created by Erin Foster and loosely based on her own marriage to Simon Tikhman, finds humour in cultural clashes without turning them into punchlines. It’s about love bumping up against tradition, family expectations and personal pride. It’s witty, awkward and occasionally tender.
The secondary characters are also a hoot. The plot naturally involves them in the story, because siblings are bound to get tangled up in this IRL (in real life, for you oldies).
I’m eager to see some of these relationships unfold in season two, almost more than our protagonists TBH (to be honest, lol).
A few bits of trivia for the pop-culture buffs: Nobody Wants This was originally titled Shiksa (a woman who is not Jewish), which is also the last word spoken in the pilot. The synagogue scenes were filmed at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, and the show dropped on Netflix in September 2024. Critics loved it – it got 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
So, grab a glassie wyn or hot chocolate and settle into the couch for this sassy binge watch.
Love doesn’t always follow the ABCs, and that’s exactly what makes this worth watching.
