Festival spotlights youth talent, underage drinking

Electric beats thundered through the venue as Jabulani Youth Development unleashed the Dlala Amapuntsula Theatre Festival recently, a high-voltage showcase of raw talent, fierce dance battles and powerful messages that electrified the crowd from the first step.

The dynamic event put a spotlight on various groups, including the all-female Dlala Amapuntsulakazi production choreographed by Odwa Zwedala and narrated by actress Phelisa Ntoyakhe, alongside powerhouse performers Emonti Revolution and Black Spinder Pantsula.

The festival aimed to raise awareness about underage drinking and encourage young people to make positive life choices, while celebrating the power of dance and artistic expression.

It featured a range of dance styles, including the unique isipantsula, and powerfully told the story of the Enyobeni tavern tragedy, leaving a lasting emotional impact on the audience.

Funded by the National Arts Council and the Eastern Cape Cultural and Performing Arts Centre, the event was widely praised by attendees for bringing high-quality theatre and dance to the community.

“It’s hard to believe things are real when they don’t come to the community,” one audience member said.

Festival director Yonela Gobingca expressed gratitude to the funders, performers and audience.

“We are very grateful to our funders, without whom this festival would not have been possible.

“We also want to thank our participants for showing up and shining, celebrating their talent and giving their all throughout the festival,” Gobingca said.

Cast members involved included: Alwaba Booi, Likhanye Bika, Emihle Mhlaba, Endinako Losini, Unako Mangcengezi, Indiphile Mayekiso, Lelethu Louw, Sinaye Madlavana, Nasiphi Tshoni, and Likhaya Lathitha.

The event was a testament to the power of dance to uplift, educate and inspire, with organisers looking forward to future collaborations.
