East London is set for an exciting Valentine’s Day on Friday February 14, as the Valentine’s mixed doubles padel tournament promises to deliver fierce competition and an electric atmosphere at Beacon Bay Country Club.
Recognised as the largest mixed doubles padel tournament in the city, this year’s edition has shattered previous records, attracting 24 teams — the biggest entry list the tournament has ever seen.
With the level of play expected to reach new heights, tournament director Veeran Naidoo believes that at least 16 teams have a genuine shot at the title, making this one of the most open and unpredictable events to date.
Adding to the drama, defending champions Gary Thorne and Jenny Milne return to the courts with targets firmly on their backs, as challengers such as Luke Groep and Linge Steenkamp from Bloemfontein are hoping to dethrone them in what is expected to be a day packed with high-quality rallies, tactical brilliance, and thrilling match-ups.
Naidoo expressed his excitement ahead of the event, highlighting the remarkable growth of padel in the region and the passion surrounding this year’s tournament.
“The interest and energy around this event has been unbelievable,” said Naidoo.
“The quality of teams this year is exceptional, and the excitement from players and supporters alike has been truly inspiring.”
With close to R10,000 in cash prizes for the winners, along with a range of additional prizes, the stakes could not be higher.
The tournament is sponsored by Vincent Hardware, Red Ant Relocation and Eviction Services, Mr Windows, Build World Construction and Projects, Bargains, Abbotsford KWIKSPAR, and Sport and Awards whose involvement continues to elevate the tournament and strengthen the sport’s presence in East London.
Naidoo said they expect a huge crowd turnout and excellent weather conditions, creating the perfect stage for a festival of sport and entertainment. As the sport continues its rapid rise in popularity, the tournament has firmly established itself as a flagship event on the local sporting calendar.
“This tournament is about more than winning. It’s about bringing people together, showcasing the very best of padel, and giving East London an event it can be proud of,” Naidoo said.
Spectators are encouraged to come early, bring the family, and be part of the full day of action from 7am until 7pm.
