On This Day (May 28) – 1st Isle of Man TT race held
Matthew Field
On this day over 100 years ago, the first Isle of Man TT took place in 1907 under the title of International Auto-Cycle Tourist Trophy. The exclusively motorcycle race is made up of a series of time-trial races held over the course of a week and takes place on a circuit of public roads. Since the first race, it has been held every year except for the period of 1940-1945 due to the outbreak of the Second World War. It is also considered the most dangerous motorsport event in the world with 146 recorded deaths since 1907 according to a New York Times article in 2017.
