Eli Naidoo, 6, East London Golf Club’s budding champ

From the time he was just 11 months old, Eli Naidoo was already swinging a golf club.

Now a rising star in the East London golfing scene at the age of six, Eli is passionate about the game. Golf runs deep in both his family roots.

His late grandfather, Ramanjee Naidoo, served as the East London Golf Club president where Eli trains two to three times a week on the driving range or out on the course.

His parents Tashmin Naidoo and Chezray Vengadajellum are his biggest fans.

“We saw his love for the game very early on,” said Tashmin.

“We make sure we’re at every practise and tournament, cheering him on. Eli thrives when he has his family around him.

“His sister Zara and uncle Reshnu often join us at tournaments, and it creates a strong support circle for him.

“Eli has a good under-standing of golf. He enjoys being on the course, competing, and making friends with other young players.“

His results are impressive. Eli entered three Border Golf Union competitions, coming  second in his supernova division in the first and winning the last two, including a top score of 43 in difficult weather.

Eli is in grade R at Merrifield College where the school noticed his talent. He would practise on their top fields. The school has no formal golf programme but his golf skills and dedication are encouraged.

School spokesperson Alison Randall says they love seeing their pupils pursue their passions, and Eli’s focus and skill are truly exceptional.

Golf coach Demi Flanagan, who works closely with Eli, praises his technique and concentration.

“We work a lot on fundamentals, and Eli absorbs instruction like a pro,” Flanagan said. “He plays in the super-novice section, which is a shortened course suitable for his age, and he handles competition calmly and confidently. He’s a joy to coach.”

Despite his busy schedule of school and golf, Eli remains a well-rounded child. He enjoys fishing, science, animals and building Lego. His love for golf does not overshadow his curiosity about the world.

He even takes time to coach his family during practise sessions, demonstrating both patience and leadership.

Eli himself describes his golfing adventure with a pride and simplicity.

“I was happy and very proud of myself when I won the tournament. I enjoy playing golf. My driver and my putter are great, but chipping is my favourite shot,” he said.

His heroes are Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.

Eli has big dreams.

“I’m going to win one of the green jackets.

“I want to be the best at golf so I can help all the animals that live on the street and give them a home.”
