Wild idea brings worlds together

MARISKA LATEROA

Adventure seekers, creatives and nature lovers are in for an unforgettable experience as Ngcambu Tours presents Capture the Wild, a two-day immersive outdoor event set to take place from April 25 to 26.

Starting at 7am from the PSJ Info Centre, the getaway promises a unique blend of exploration, creativity and relaxation under the open sky.

Headlining the experience is special guest Sivu Giba, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, producer and entrepreneur from KuGompo known for her powerful storytelling and visual artistry.

More than just a tour, Capture the Wild is designed to bring people together through nature, music, film and storytelling. From scenic exploration and photography to a vibrant campfire atmosphere with live performances and a movie night, the event offers something for everyone.

Giba said her work was shaped by her experiences while studying and working in Cape Town and Durban.

“I learnt a lot about production through the spaces I was in,” she said.

She studied at Big Fish Filmmaking School in Cape Town, where she honed her documentary filmmaking skills and gained experience working on major productions, including blockbuster titles like the Mad Max franchise, Black SailsBring the House Down and Dominion.

“That’s where the journey began for me. I initially started as a stylist before moving into feature films and eventually becoming an assistant director,” she said.

Her passion now lies in telling culturally inspired and impactful stories.

“I like telling real-based narratives and empowering stories.

“We follow the stories of instrumentalists, where they learnt their craft and the cultural significance behind it,” she said.

Giba is currently working on a documentary titled Uhadi, which explores the indigenous African musical instrument and the stories behind it.

Beyond filmmaking, she is passionate about youth empowerment, particularly addressing challenges such as drug and alcohol abuse.

She said one of the highlights of the event will be engaging with emerging and young filmmakers from across the province.

“I’m looking forward to meeting young creatives, reviewing their work and helping them shape their stories.

“Many young people want to enter the industry but don’t know how to navigate it,” she said.

Giba also hopes to guide participants on how to access funding and opportunities within the film industry.

Her long-term vision includes growing film tourism in the province by showcasing its natural beauty to potential production companies.

“We want to photograph different locations and present them to clients who can bring film productions here.

“That can create jobs and investment opportunities,” she said.

She added that the Port St Johns area was carefully selected for its striking landscape.

“It has a jungle-like feel, with rugged terrain, caves, rivers and incredible coastal scenery.

“The rolling hills and endless ocean make it ideal for film,” she said.

Guests can choose from three packages tailored to suit different preferences:

The excursion package includes transport, refreshments, a guided excursion and a photography experience.

The camping package offers a braai, live music, film screening, live poetry and access to ablution facilities.
