Wild Women launch own calendar

Celebration of strength for women, nature

THE Wild Women had another chance to enjoy each other’s company when they got together for the successful launch of their calendar recently.

The energetic group of women decided to make a calendar after being together for six years and always joking about it.

The calendar is themed “Strength Fitness and Nature”, aptly describing the group of fun-loving, fit and strong women enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

The proceeds of the Wild Women calendar, like most things they do, go to the African Angels Independent School and Busfare Babies Birth Centre.

The Wild Women have been supporting African Angels for six years now.

They have also done the Wild Women on the Run adventure race, which was the brainchild of extreme athlete Kim van Kets.

This year they have decided to capture the race’s sense of fun and freedom.

“A lot of women grow up judging [other women] or being judged and this was an opportunity to be free. And it was so liberating for the women to not be judged on how they or their bodies look,” said Van Kets, who is also a founding member of the Wild Women.

The endurance athlete was referring to some photos taken for the calendar where the women went topless and also had photographs taken from behind.

“Everyone involved said it was one of the most invigorating experiences they’ve ever had. Everyone was comfortable without the feeling of judgment [from the other women],” creative director Kerry-Lyn Honey explained.

“We wanted the calendar to have the look and feel of strength, unity, fun and friendship, and I think it does.

“The girls say the calendar shoot did a lot [of good] for them on a personal level as well.”

The calendar was shot by professional photographer Anine Koch at no cost at Kwelera Beach and on What’s Landing farm, in Kwelera.

“It’s a celebration calendar, meaning it is not a dated calendar, it is not a 2018 calendar, but can be used forever – to write in birthdays or anniversaries and keep it. The calendar celebrates all these things and also celebrates women, nature, Women’s Month and the strength of a woman,” said Honey.

Inspirational quotes supplied by the Wild Women are also written on each page of the beautiful calendar.

More than 120 calendars were sold on the night.

Honey also said that no money was spent to create the calendar, meaning whatever proceeds they make, go to the African Angels and Busfare Babies charities.

The calendar costs R150 and is available from Hartspace (creative studio) at 40A Red House Avenue, Vincent.
