BCM steps in to help residents after floods

The community of Duncan Village in ward 2, which was reportedly one of the worst affected areas during the recent floods, received some much-needed relief from the provincial department of community safety recently.

MEC Weziwe TikanaGxotiwe delivered relief packages consisting of food, sanitary towels and blankets to over 100 families last week.

The Buffalo City Metro said it was still involved in mop-up operations and a call had been made to stakeholders to assist the victims of the floods. “Over 800 families have been affected by the flash floods. The municipality is coordinating aid from different
stakeholders and donations to the victims, who have lost everything ,” said BCM spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya

Also last week, human settlements minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, deputy minister Pam Tshwete, EC MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe and deputy mayor Princess Faku embarked on a visit in areas around the metro to assess recent flood damages.

“Over 800 people were affected and displaced by the floods, most of whom are now using community halls as shelter,” Ngwenya said. “The flash floods claimed seven lives and the ministry announced that some of the victims would be relocated to Mtsotso, near Mdantsane”
