Genre: Comedy, adventure

If you’re in the mood for a movie made purely for entertainment then Mafia Mamma is here to fulfill that craving.

Toni Collette plays Kristin, a soft, gentle and kind-mannered suburban mom who unexpectedly inherits her late grandfather’s mafia empire in Italy.

Guided by a trusted business manager, played by Monica Bellucci, she stumbles through a series of dangerous situations that are completely out of her comfort zone.

Collette gives a hilarious and pleasantly surprising performance. Collette and Bellucci have great onscreen chemistry.

They carry this film and balance each other out with the dark and light comedy.

The movie does not take itself too seriously and pokes fun at the caricatures of mafia mob life we have seen depicted on screen before in movies like Goodfellas and The Godfather.

The stunning Italian location and fitting score only added to the film’s appeal.

Kristin’s constant fascination with being in Italy and the romantic delusions this initially stirred in her makes the drama she encounters even funnier.

As lighthearted as the movie is, it also speaks subtly to the importance of women’s empowerment, self-love and family.

The film is filled with fun little gags that highlight Kristin’s innocence and naivety, like her bringing homemade muffins to a mafia mob war meeting, or her attempt at using moves she learned in a self-defense class in a fight at the end of the film.

The movie holds an R rating for the graphic and bloody violence, which is certainly not suitable for children or sensitive viewers.

This is not a film to be taken seriously so laugh at the silly antics and enjoy yourself.

Mafia Mamma is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
