Young men receive guidance from elders

In light of the constantly rising crime statistics, abuse and gender-based violence, Pastor Xolisa Makalima and Andile Siko hosted a special motivational event for young men and boys to benefit from emotionally and mentally.

This event took place on Friday, at Soul Winning Bible Church in Mdantsane.

The ‘Mentor a boy child’ initiative included a programme that covered talks on various aspects of initiation and safe circumcision.

Makalima explained the need to have an initiative focused on the needs of the boy child and what they should be learning during this very important life journey.

“When these boys go through the initiation process, they learn all sorts of bad things. This is where they are taught to do drugs, and be disrespectful, when they should be learning about being good men and taking care of their families and their communities,” Makalima said.

Makalima stressed that it was important for young boys to receive guidance from their elders because it was the only way to ensure a safe future for all. “We noticed many young boys and men living life like sheep with no shepherd to guide them, getting involved in drugs and crime.

“This is because many boys don’t have a father figure to guide them. Boy children have been ignored for a very long time, we see them become criminals every day, and prisons are full. Something needs to be done because these are the fathers of tomorrow and the husbands of our daughters,” Makalima said.

The speeches of the day also included a strong Christian message, highlighting the importance having a relationship with God. A member of SAPS spoke about the legal implications of getting involved with drugs.

Makalima said, with this initiative, they will be visiting young boys while they’re at the initiation schools and guide them through the process once they return.
