Residents of Duncan Village are set to come together for a community cleanup in honour of the late Sizwe Mlungwana, who passed away a few days after making a public declaration on Facebook to organise a cleanup campaign.
His wife, Andisiwe, has since taken up the reigns to realise her husband’s dream of giving back to his community.
“My late husband was passionate about keeping our township clean. Tragically, he didn’t get to see his dream become a reality. I knew I had to carry on and make his vision a reality to make our community a better place,” Mlungwana said.
In the initial post on June 6 2024, Sizwe was inspired by a beach cleanup that was conducted along the Blue Bend to Bonza Bay river mouth.
He wrote: “This is a picture of a group of people cleaning the Blue Bend to Bonza Bay river mouth. Can we do this for Ziphunzana/Duncan Village? Let’s do this. I’ll buy food. We’ll need about 150 volunteers for this project.
“We’ll need black plastic bags, gloves and a truck to dump this for us. Let’s clean our communities as a regular habit. Let our children play around clean communities.”
Mlungwana said the public can help by volunteering, spreading awareness on social media and by donating gloves and trash bags. The cleanup will take place on Wednesday, February 19 at 10am. For info, visit Andisiwe Mlungwana’s Facebook page.
