Merrifield pupils excel on chessboard

A resounding “checkmate” goes out to young chess prodigy Vuyanathi Mdaka, a grade 2 pupil from Merrifield Preparatory School. He recently showcased exceptional talent at the Eastern Cape Open chess tournament, achieving a remarkable first place in the under-10 section.

Adding to this impressive feat, Vuyanathi also secured a commendable 14th position overall in the combined U8 to U14 category, competing against a field of 80 players.

The success on the chessboard didn’t stop there for the Merrifield community. Merrifield College pupils also demonstrated their strategic prowess at the same tournament. Storm Scheepers emerged victorious, claiming first place in the U18 section. Adding to the College’s triumph, Ethan Pearson also performed brilliantly, securing third place in the U18 section.

These outstanding achievements highlight the depth of chess talent within the Merrifield schools and the dedication of these young players.
