Jersey week brings winter cheer to East London children

Just in time for the cold, the warm-hearted women behind jersey week distributed beanies, jerseys, and blankets to families in need, last week.

Since 1986, jersey week has been a beloved East London tradition, wrapping hundreds of underprivileged children in warmth and kindness each winter.

Thanks to the annual support of the Rotary Club of Arcadia, this grassroots initiative distributes hand-knitted jerseys, beanies, scarves, and blankets to little ones across the city.

The heart of the project lies with a group of dedicated knitters, who lovingly craft each item.

Their wool is supplied through the Rotary Club’s funding and a generous annual donation from Saprotex, ensuring no knitter ever runs short.

On Monday June 2, volunteers Kathy Naylor, Kathy Mogg, and Anne Murphy, gathered to sort and pack the colourful creations, with deliveries to follow throughout the week.

“We’re incredibly grateful to all our knitters,” organisers said.

“Their dedication means so many children can step into winter with a warm jersey and a smile.”
