Hudson Park High school will resound with music this weekend, when their vocal and music departments take to the stage for Sing It, a new production that celebrates Hudson’s rich musical legacy.
The show premieres on July 26 at the Gibson Kente Theatre and features Hudson High choir and individual vocalists performing songs from a variety of genres. Vocal department head Nasine van Rensburg believes the show gives talented Hudson performers a platform from which to showcase the skills they have learnt both within her department and under head of music, Wesley Wong.
The vocal department covers comprehensive training for pupils with an aptitude for singing and focuses on teaching singing techniques, vocal styles, music history and theory.
Van Rensburg has helmed the vocal department towards success for the last two years which, in 2024, saw learners take to the stage for the first ever local production of Disney’s classic, High School Musical, which Van Rensburg directed, choreographed and coached vocals for.
Vocal training offers pupils numerous benefits beyond just improving singing ability because it enhances communication skills and boosts confidence. The vocal department believes that training strengthens vocal health, posture, and breath control, which benefit both performance and public speaking.
For some pupils, it can uncover a passion or career path in the arts beyond high school.
Sing It will feature individual performances, ensembles, duets and appearances from the larger choir.
Van Rensburg said: “Our aim is to present the range of talent and diversity in the arts that we have at Hudson High.
“Hudson is well known for its big band and the choir which lays the stage for the emerging talent we have coming from our individual vocalists.
“Each school has developed their own niche and Hudson has been building and succeeding at its capacity to be at the forefront of excellence in music, arts and culture.
“My goal is for the pupils to walk off that stage feeling good about themselves, knowing they worked hard and knowing they can achieve anything together.”
The vocal celebration can be seen at the Gibson Kente Theatre at Hudson Park High School at 6.30pm.
Tickets cost R80 and seats can be booked on the QR code on the Hudson Park High School Facebook page.
