‘Respect, discipline, no booze

He walks, talks, hears as well as you and I, but Bunga Melane Jackson is 105 years old.

Jackson is the grandfather of popular Mdantsane FM DJ radio personality Sthembele “DJ Mantofontofo”.

His 105th birthday was a big deal. The EL ICC was filled with love, laughter, and a deep sense of gratitude as the ultra-high age citizen was celebrated recently by the station, in partnership with the EL ICC and department of social development.

This was a tribute to a life well-lived.

He told Go!: “Reaching this age is no small achievement, especially in today’s world. It is a sign of strength, wisdom, and the grace of God.”

“To be honest, I don’t even know how old I am.

“I remember, one time I went to the clinic and the nurses saw my ID and jokingly asked what was I still living for?”

DJ Mantofontofo, known for his warm spirit and deep connection with his listeners, was visibly emotional. He bristled with pride.

“I am so grateful to the ICC for doing this for me and my grandfather.

“When he turned 100 years old, they invited him and hosted a celebration for him.

“And now, at 105, they’re still here, still supporting us. It means so much to me and to our whole family.”

Jackson, strong and full of life, stands tall as a symbol of resilience and independence.

He does everything for himself — walks without assistance, prepares his own meals, speaks clearly, and enjoys visitors, whom he greets with a welcoming smile.

“I can still walk, talk, see, and even cook for myself. I thank God for keeping me alive this long,” he said.

He was a rock-solid husband and father to seven children, but sadly, two of his children and his beloved wife have passed away.

He now lives alone in the village as the last remaining elder of his generation.

Everyone who was in attendance at the birthday wanted to know what is the secret to living such a long and healthy life for the old man.

Jackson didn’t hesitate to share his wisdom. He didn’t speak about medicine or rigid exercise routines.

Instead, he shared timeless values that guided him through more than a century of life.

“The key to my long life is that I always respected my parents and elders, and I have never touched a single drop of alcohol in my life.

“I saw what alcohol did to people in my community. I saw how it broke families, damaged health, and led people down the wrong path. I didn’t want that for myself,” he said.

“I was taught from a young age to respect my parents, my elders, and everyone around me.

“I never raised my voice at them. I listened to their advice, even when I didn’t always understand it at the time. That respect shaped the man I became.

“You must live with discipline, you must respect yourself and others. That’s what keeps you going,” he said.

One of his birthday gifts was a special hotel room gifted by the EL ICC to him and his family.

The social development department gave him with thoughtful gifts such as a brand new set of pyjamas, a personalised night gown embroidered with his name, comfy slippers and a fresh set of blankets and pillows.

Surrounded by laughter and music, the grandfather was asked what gift he would truly love.

“I don’t have a TV or a radio at home. Life in the village gets very lonely. I would be happy to have those.”

The response was immediate and emotional. DJ Mantofontofo smiled and promised to get a radio for him and the department promised a television.

Mantofontofo said: “He’s not just my grandfather — he’s a living example of what it means to live with purpose.

“His wisdom, his strength, and his heart have shaped my life. I’m so proud to share this moment with him.”
