Veteran writer Norris wins Comrades Marathon journalist of the year award

Seasoned sports journalist Bob Norris, renowned for his unwavering passion for athletics, has been named Comrades Marathon journalist of the year at the GEMS Spirit of Comrades Awards in Durban on Friday.

Hosted by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) in partnership with the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS), the prestigious annual gala celebrates the exceptional values of selflessness, service, dedication, courage, perseverance and Ubuntu — the very spirit that defines the world’s oldest and largest ultra-marathon.

Established in 1996, the awards recognise three remarkable individuals each year — not only for their achievements in the race, but also for their embodiment of the noble values associated with “the ultimate human race”.

This year, the ceremony paid a special tribute to Norris for his decades-long coverage of the Comrades. His extensive reporting on the race throughout the year was independently verified by Newsclip Media Monitoring, and this affirmed his continued dedication to the sport and the race that has shaped much of his life’s work.

Norris, a respected sports journalist with the Daily Dispatch for 45 years, has also hosted a weekly community radio slot and previously served as a columnist for SA Runner Magazine.

Reflecting on his lifelong connection to the event, Norris told Go! his journey with the Comrades began in 1977, when he was inspired by the radio broadcast of Alan Robb’s second victory, and he decided to run the race himself. Two years later, he completed his first Comrades and went on to earn his green number in 1994 after numerous finishes.

“Comrades is an integral part of life. Running — and in this instance, the Comrades Marathon — means so much to me and my family. It’s brought countless friendships and experiences, from running and coaching to organising races and writing about them.

“I’ve achieved medals from Vic Clapham through to silver and gold.

“With 2026 marking the 99th Comrades and 2027 the 100th, I hope to still be writing for both — and beyond.”

The Journalist of the Year Award, which includes a one-ounce pure gold medallion, recognises those who exemplify the inherent goodness of humanity and inspire others through their work.

GEMS COO Dr Vuyo Gqola congratulated Norris and praised the partnership with the CMA.
