Quiet steel, eloquence of Cambridge award winner

Humility, eloquence, and a quiet determination has defined Michael-Callum Scott’s high school years, earning him several awards, among them Cambridge High 2025 dux award.

Scott capped off a remarkable academic journey filled with passion, perseverance, and purpose.

The school’s annual prize giving ceremony celebrated excellence, commitment, and character, and few embodied these qualities more than Scott.

Scott received several other prestigious awards: The Martha Harty bilingualism prizes for English and Afrikaans, The Spencer Welman literature prize, and the state-owned enterprise SOE Women’s Association Trophy for excellence in English.

Scott said of being named dux: “When my name was called, I was momentarily speechless. It was a proud and emotional moment, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way.

“My mom encouraged me to read and write from a young age, and my dad would tell me stories every morning before school.

“Coming from a multilingual family has given me a real appreciation for the richness and diversity of languages,” he said.

Scott’s love for literature blossomed under the guidance of his English teacher, Claire Gawler, who was a “major inspiration. Her lessons are nothing short of legendary. She’s taught me to approach texts not just with understanding, but with curiosity and passion.”

Gawler said: “What set Michael apart is his commitment to academic excellence. He engaged meaningfully in his learning, always asking questions, debating ideas, and contributing thoughtfully. That willingness to engage made him an outstanding pupil.”

Scott left an indelible mark at Cambridge High as deputy head boy for 2025.

He excelled as an accomplished debater, choir member and public speaker, representing the school in eisteddfods and national competitions including Talent Africa, where he earned numerous accolades for his dramatic performances and speeches.

Gawler said his success reflected the school’s balanced approach to education.

“We believe that excellence grows from consistency, support and active engagement both in and beyond the classroom. Michael’s story illustrates how partnership between pupil, school, and home leads to outstanding results.”

Parents Glen and Kerry Scott said: “We were overwhelmed and very proud. Hearing his name announced was one of those moments you never forget. Knowing the challenges he’s faced and the hard work he’s put in made it deeply moving.”

They said their son was a young man of humility, faith and quiet determination. He doesn’t chase recognition but gives his best in everything he does,” Kerry said. “We’ve always reminded him that success without kindness means little. His resilience, respect and compassion make us prouder than his awards.”

Scott transferred schools in grade 9 from rural KwaZulu-Natal to Cambridge High.

“The transition was significant,” Scott said.

“But through prayer, perseverance, and the incredible support from family, teachers, and peers, I was able to flourish.”

Looking ahead, he intends to read for a degree in education, and then become a teacher.

“Education is one of the most powerful ways to give back to the community that has shaped me. I hope to inspire future generations to pursue excellence with passion and integrity.”

To younger pupils, he advises: “Believe in your potential. Hard work, faith, and perseverance are the foundations of success. As the scripture reminds us, ‘You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.’ Stay focused, stay humble, and trust that your efforts will bear fruit.”
