The streets of KuGompo are already buzzing with suspense and anticipation as a global fitness phenomenon prepares to make its official landing in Slummies.
In an exclusive interview with the Go! on Tuesday, Hercules Bootcamp founder Singwa Silinga revealed that his upcoming Hybrid Fitness craze — a brutal combination of high-intensity functional training and running — is about to shake up the local fitness landscape through an explosive new partnership.
”The actual Hybrid Fitness craze has been an international hit, and it’s made strength training popular again,” Silinga said.
“CrossFit is a component of cross-sectional fitness- strength training, cardiovascular fitness, and a multitude of other components.
“Hybrid Fitness just introduced a 1km run in between each station.”
Silinga did not mince his words about the sheer physicality required for the event set to be staged at NTT VW in Abbortsford on June 20.
“It’s crazy work, I say. It really tests your grit, strength, stamina, endurance, and willpower.
“East London has been hungry for this, and I’m all too proud and honoured to be the vessel to bring this to Slummies.”
The event represents a massive rebranding milestone for Hercules Bootcamp SA, aligning the local wellness movement with major corporate brands.
The initial spark for the event came from a timely economic observation.
“It was genuinely being at the right place, at the right time, and saying the right thing,” Silinga said.
“I literally mentioned that imported cars are disrupting the economy in vehicle sales, and Simthembile Cakwe from NTT VW in Abbotsford immediately gave me a call.
“He suggested we shake things up to get some foot traffic into the dealership to view the latest cars on offer. What better way than to host a fitness session at their amazing venue?”
The collaboration reunites Silinga and Cakwe, who previously orchestrated the successful Hercules Bootcamp Fitness Festival in 2019.
Joining NTT VW is long-standing partner Vodacom, driven by a familiar face.
”Noluthando Nkunzi from Vodacom is an old Hercules Bootcamp member. She’s a genius in marketing and has been doing big things there for a while now,” Silinga said.
Vodacom’s footprint includes the extensive EC Wellness Tour campaign in 2023.
”Our brand relationship has grown stronger ever since.”
Silinga has been highly intentional about creating a space where the youth and veterans collide.
”We believe in fitness being accessible for all, and the young crowd is literally our future.
”I love seeing young people train with the older crowd. Both learn from each other — the young learn the basics of old school, and the old re-imagine their lives in the young folk.
“There’s always that innate rivalry, but it’s healthy to see how the veterans fare up against the young ones.” While local fitness enthusiasts are eager to sign up, this reporter has already filled in the application form.
One major question remains under wraps: What do the stations actually look like?
”Literally everyone has been asking about this,” laughed Silinga, recalling a message from local fitness enthusiast Chuma Memela.
”We laughed in stitches about that question. It’s on everyone’s mind, so I guess the suspense is what makes this all exciting too. But not to worry, I will reveal all before the event.”
The competitive banter is already heating up across KuGompo. Silinga shared that another local, Sinethemba Mazingisa, joked about entering a friend just to guarantee he wouldn’t finish dead last himself.
”People can see this is challenging, but everyone is throwing caution to the wind and just giving it horns. We love it.
“Life’s too short to think too much — just do it.
“It will make the best braai story no matter what happens.
“I even have old friends who’ve never trained since high school entering, all because they want to see if they’ve still got it.”
Beyond the physical challenge, Silinga views the event and the corporate backing as a vital intervention for community health.
”There’s a lot of mental depression, and people need ways to alleviate stress and other factors that cause a health risk in their lives.
“Having these brands support us and make these events possible really does help our community come together.
“Look at what the Springboks do for us as a nation — they really do bring us together.
“These brands have placed themselves on a huge pedestal, and we are all too happy to look up to them for their continued support in more challenging events in future.”
