GET ready for a race like no other. Gonubie Round Table are, for the first time ever, hosting a Bed Race day at the East London Race track this year.
The Bed Race was started by the Midrand Round Table 25 years ago.
Gonubie Round Table have now adopted the race for East London, in an effort to raise funds for the community.
The event is a team-building exercise and requires that companies buy hospital beds from Gonubie Round Table, decorate them as they’d like to and take part in a 4km race.
Once the race is over, the hospital beds will be donated to various clinics in need.
“Our target is 30 companies, and so far we’ve received entries from 13 different companies,” Gonubie Round Table member and one of the organisers, Mark Schultz said.
Companies need to select a team of five members – four to push the bed to the finish line, and one “patient” on the bed.
The teams will face various obstacles along the way, testing them both mentally and physically. Companies are also welcome to buy an obstacle and will be able to advertise their business on the day.

Round Table member and organiser, Dean Starbuck said: “Raising funds in East London has become difficult, with the same old, stagnant fundraisers.
“We wanted to bring something new and different to benefit the community.”
The day promises to be a wonderful family event, with various entertainment and stalls available.
“We are appealing to businesses to join in on all the fun,” Starbuck said.
The proceeds from the day, as well as the hospital beds will be donated to worthy charities and clinics.
“As of yet, we have not chosen a designated charity but we’d like to help as many as we can,” Schultz said.
If anyone knows of any charities or clinics in need of hospital beds and funding or if you are interested in taking part in the event, please visit the “Bed Race – Gonubie Round Table” Facebook page or contact Starbuck on 060-410-2084 or Schultz on 060-483-2535.
