YESTERDAY at about 12.30pm detectives investigating the missing person’s case of Carmelitta Baatjies, found her dead body buried under the bed at her home in Breidbach.
Baatjies was reported on Sunday (September 3) in King William’s Town by her husband. Police visited her house at Nerina Street, Breidbach where the couple lives.
“Upon arrival the husband was in the shack at the back of the house. During the interview, the husband denied having a quarrel with his wife,” said police spokeswoman, Siphokazi Mawisa.
“Police received information from the community that the husband had killed his wife and that he wanted to sell her car. According to the report, the husband alleged that the wife left the house on Friday [September 1] with two cell phones and told him that she won’t be coming back home again.
“During the interview police noticed loose soil under the bed. The police asked about the soil and requested the husband lift the bed up. When asked to dig the soil the husband ran away,” said Mawisa.
Detectives called for backup from K9, Flying Squad, KWT detectives and CSC members and they gave chase. “Airwing also assisted in the search but it was in vain,” said Mawisa.
A 30-year-old male was arrested for murder while other alleged suspect, the husband Eveno Baatjies is still on the run, said police.
“The deceased’s body was found lying underneath the bed, with her clothes on. At the moment it is not clear as to how she was killed as there was no blood on the body.
“A case of murder has been opened for investigation. The suspect will appear at King William’s Town Magistrate Court on Monday,” added Mawisa.
