The councillor and her husband appeared before East London magistrate Rochelle Sam where the court heard it was up to the DPP to decide if the two should be prosecuted for the double murder.

The two are in court for the alleged murder of two Reeston women – Nomboniso Twana, 54, and Nombulelo Mpitipiti, 50.

The murders took place in August.

As the matter was heard, residents of Reeston staged a peaceful protest outside the magistrate’s court calling for Mthuthuzeli not be granted bail.

They sang anti-Matiwane songs saying “her and her husband shot and killed our comrades in Reeston”.
