BORDER Super League got was under way on Saturday at the Buffalo Park Stadium, with the Buffaloes defeating Mdantsane-based team Winter Rose 32-7. Buffs coach Eddie Watson said the first half was concerning, worrying for him, although they went on to win won their sixth match.
“We didn’t play well at all in the first half but in the second half, we had a much better performance.
“We stuck to our guns, playing better pods and things like that.”but the first half was shocking.”to me.
Watson said the he thinks that the opposing team also made were making careless mistakes, which made things easier for them.
“If Winter Rose didn’t drop as many balls as they did in the first half, the results would have been different,” he said.
The Buffs have only lost two games at the momentso far, and won six.
They still have a game in hand that they wereare supposed to have played last week, but couldn’t due to the unavailability of referees.
“As we continue with the league, we need to improve with our ball skills.
“The pods were not working at all. And I think the guys had much to lose, and obviously at the end of the day we tried to spread the ball wide too quickly.
“The long passes didn’t work out at all and in a tight game, that can cost you,” said Watson said.
Watson indicated there were some mistakes, but he was happy with the five points they obtained.
However, heHe was not too ambitious about reaching the Gold Cup at the end of the season.
“Every team is aiming to get to the Gold Cup, but in my honest opinion, the goal is to end up in the top four this year, but I don’t think we are up to the Gold Cup’s standard really,” he said. concluded Watson.
Winter Rose coach Luntu Rara said the league games were getting difficult, but they would will continue to fight on.
“On Tuesday we are back at training. We are going to fix everything that we think went wrong from the match against Buffs, because I think we lack communication skills on the field, and our decision- making when it came to players was poor,” said Rara said.
Although the team has been having trouble securing wins, Rara is positive that there will be some change in the long run.
