Dance club stays in step

Dynamic Dance Academy will host its first July holiday club for one week at the Dynamic Body Studio in East London.

The holiday club will  be low-key  and benefit those who miss out on the annual December holiday club (“Stay in step with Dynamic Dance, GO! & Express, October 19 2017).

It commenced on Monday and will run until July 11.

Academy owner, Vicky Luff, said that although it’s for a shorter period, it will be less intensive but still high-paced.

“It’s a smaller programme and the kids won’t be divided into ages groups. It will keep their bodies active where they’ll learn all techniques and they don’t have to have previous dance experience,” Luff said.

The participants will be exposed to dance styles such as hip-hop, Spanish, pantsula, belly dance, jazz, afro-fusion, classical, gumboot, contemporary and Bollywood.

Luff said that there would be a mix of new and returning students who  will participate  during the showcasing.

“They will be exposed to being on stage during the showcasing because this is not just for pros but for everyone.”

Guest vocalist performer, Megan Francis,  will sing some of the songs  the kids will be dancing to. Francis is an East Londoner, having grown up and attended school in the area.

The passionate vocalist said that to perform at such an event made her feel that she had “come full circle”.

“This career can be gruelling and it will be wonderful to watch the kids get a chance to perform and collaborate with each other,” Francis said.

She said it was  a good thing to help someone achieve something. Choreographers will include Old Selbornian and international star, Sonwa Sakuba (“International star returns home to give back to his community”, GO! & Express, May 31 2018), Unathi Xenti, Josie Nel and academy owner Luff.

The showcase will take place at the Arts Theatre in Arcadia on July 10 and 11  starting at 6:30pm. Tickets will cost R50 for scholars and pensioners and adults pay R 70 at the door.
