Four East London pupils are representing SA at the VISSLA International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Championships in Huntington Beach, California in the United States.

They left on Sunday October 21 and will return on Tuesday November 6.

Bryce du Preez, 17, Mitch du Preez, 15, Tayla de Coning, 17, and Zoë Steyn, 14, are part of the team that will compete in the championships.

The Daily Dispatch reported (“Local teen champ the youngest ever in SA” August 13) that Steyn is East London’s newest surfing star when she beat the odds at Nahoon Reef to become the youngest ever Mercedes-Benz South African women’s surfing champion.

De Coning shared her journey with The GO! (“Tayla makes waves” September 27) about how she fell in love with surfing six years ago while taking a walk with her grandfather at Nahoon Beach.

A few years later and she has emerged as a champion at many surfing competitions.

“I am very happy with being selected to represent my country overseas,” said De Coning.

Lauren, who is Bryce and Mitch du Preez’s mom, said she was proud of her sons’ achievements.
