HUDSON Park High School pupil Nonelela Yikha was recently selected for the South African U19 cricket team to tour India from February 15 to March 17.
He was chosen after playing for the Warriors U19 cricket team at the Clubs Week in Stellenbosch, where he During the Clubs Week tournament, Yikha received the bowling prize for the most wickets.
Nonu, as he is affectionately known by his friends, has not had an easy life.
“Waking up at 4.30am was a norm and I would embark on my 2km walk to the Berlin train station. The train would stop at Cambridge and then I would walk another 2km to school,” Yikha said.
During the middle of last year, Hudson Park managed to secure a bursary from Cricket South Africa for Yikha so that he could move into the school’s hostel.
Hudson Park public relations officer Kirsty Dell says Yikha is a wonderful young man who deserves his good fortune.
“He is totally dedicated to making his mark in cricket. Putting in many hours of additional practice, he has through guts, perseverance and total commitment reached a goal he always had – to play cricket for South Africa,” Hudson Park public relations officer Kirsty Dell said.
