Merrifield Mile family fun ahead

Time is ticking towards the start of 2019’s this year’s KFC Merrifield Mile on Sunday February 17 at the Wriggleswade Dam.

With four events – covering distances from 1.6km, 500m Dash, Terraforce 250m and a KFC Kids Fun Splash – there is something for everyone, from the serious athlete to the little swimmer looking to dip into the big dam.

“We really want to stress that the KFC Merrifield Mile and all the events on offer are geared towards catering for the whole family,” organiser Tracey Mangold said.

“Safety is paramount, with NSRI and other medical support onsite, and the distances are clearly marked with help on the water for any swimmer that may need it.

“We want to invite the whole family out to have fun here at Wriggleswade. There will be food and craft stalls, jumping castles and loads of prizes.” for both competitive and lucky entrants across all events.”

Merrifield Prep School and College are proud to host the 17th edition of the annual event, and someone who has taken part in every Mile since inception, is Merrifield Prep head of prep Debbie Lacey.

“The KFC Merrifield Mile encapsulates family time, healthy living and appreciation of for the beautiful environment we live in.

“It’s a privilege to have been a part of the steering committee since the Mile’s inception and to have seen see it grow into one of the major happenings on the East London sporting calendar,” Lacey said.

“Swimming is such a good form of exercise and does not have any age restrictions, so I aim to participate in many more.”

Entries are open at www.merrifieldmile.co.za until the morning of Friday morning February 15, and are also available at Merrifield School, Sportsmans Warehouse and Cycle HQ.

Swimmers can also enter at registration at Merrifield School on Saturday, 16 February, between 9am and 1pm.

Swimmers entered in all events will get bang for their buck as entry will guarantee a T-shirt, swimming ers cap, goodiey bag and more.

There are also loads of prizes on offer for category winners, as well as lucky draw prizes, including a Stand Up Paddle from SUP South Africa Azstron worth R10,000 and two Swatch watches from Dennis Collins Jewellers, up for grabs. for swimmers who stay for prizegiving on Sunday.

Mangold thanked the many sponsors who have helped make the KFC Merrifield Mile a reality, drawing crowds of 4,000 spectators and 1,000 swimmers across events in the past.

This year KFC have come on board as the lead sponsor of the Mile, and other sponsors include Eco-Tanks, Stone Towers, Nutriwell, Dynamic EMS, Kat Leisure, Rance Timber, Stutt Group, Let’s Travel, Vincent Park, Terraforce EC, Visual Advertising, C&G Bodyworks, GO! & Express and Border Internet.
