Ladies flock to nite race

ON YOUR MARKS: Runners take off at the Kemptson Ladies Race on Saturday

THOUSANDS of runners flocked to Kennington Road in Nahoon last Saturday for the 10km and 5km Kempston Ladies Nite Race.

Only women participated in the 10km event while the 5km event was open to both women and men.

The race has been organised by Oxford Striders for the last 30 years and has been sponsored by Kempston Group for 21 years.

“This amazing, long-standing partnership has seen numbers grow to nearly 3,000 participants this year,” said Oxford Striders member Helen Pretorius.

“The purpose of the event is to encourage the entire family to come out and enjoy a fun-filled evening of walking and running. It is a race with a difference.”

The introduction of the 5km run-walk has helped boost numbers and added an element of fun to the event, as men are now allowed to enter and dress up for the occasion.

The Schwulst sisters led the pack in the 10km with Tara, 19, coming in first place with time of 41:27. Her sister Cindy, 27, was seven seconds behind her with a time of 41:34.

Stephanie Smith, 33, came in third place in 43:9.

“The turn-out was magnificent! We are thrilled with the amount of participants,” said Pretorius.
