BCM executive mayor Xola Phakathi has called on East London residents to assist Port St Johns following major flooding brought about by heavy rains over the weekend.
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the devastating #PortStJohns floods and we pray for the safety of those still being evacuated and the rescue workers who have been deployed there.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and assist in whatever way possible,” said Phakathi in a statement on released on his Facebook page.
Phakathi said that the Port St Johns Disaster Satellite Centre is calling for urgent donations of mattresses, blankets, bedding, food, and heaters.
The flooding in Port St Johns comes after torrential downpours experienced across the country over the weekend which has destroyed homes, forced many to evacuate, and claimed the lives of at least 33 people so far.
Those looking to assist can contact the satellite centre’s donation coordinator Thandazwa Thwatshuka at 073-598-8082.
